Patient Resources & FAQ

  • What is Barrett’s Esophagus?

A precancerous condition caused by damage to the lining of the esophagus from digestive liquids. Barrett’s esophagus puts you at high risk for developing esophageal cancer.

  • How do I know if I am a candidate for LINX?

Two diagnostic tests are used to determine if patient will qualify for LINX: EGD with pH bravo and manometry. An upper gi with esophagram may also be required based on your results from the above testing.

  • What happens during an EGD with pH Bravo?

You will have a small capsule attached to the esophagus, this will detach and pass through your digestive tract with your bowel movement. The bravo device will be used to track and monitor your reflux symptoms. Please return the device to the Dublin Surgery Center 48 hours after the procedure unless otherwise directed.

  • Will I feel the capsule in my esophagus?

Some patients may have a vague sensation that “something” is in their esophagus. Chewing food and drinking liquids may minimize this sensation. You will not have any eating restrictions after the EGD pH Bravo.

  • How long do you have the LINX device?

LINX is designed to be a lifelong implant.

  • Can LINX be removed if needed?

Yes, the LINX device may be removed if needed with a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

  • Are there any side effects with LINX?

The most common side effect is discomfort or difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia. It is often temporary and a normal part of the healing process. For more information on side effects please visit www.linxforlife.com.

  • How often should I eat following LINX surgery?

You are encouraged to eat something of substance every 2-3 hours. You should also eat a tablespoon of pudding, yogurt, or applesauce every 1-2 hours while awake to help exercise your LINX device.

  • When can I start eating normally again?

You are encouraged to eat a normal diet as soon as tolerated.

  • What if I am having difficulty swallowing?

It is not uncommon to experience difficulty swallowing after a LINX procedure. This may worsen around 2-4 weeks after surgery and continue up to 6 months after. It is important that you continue to eat soft foods during this time even if it feels they are getting stuck. Reverting to a liquid diet will make this worse, please continue to work the device with soft foods.

  • Can I have an MRI after LINX placement?

Yes. LINX patients may undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) up to either 0.7-Tesla (0.7T) or 1.5-Tesla (1.5T) depending on the LINX model implanted. You should discuss the MRI scanning options with your physician prior to deciding on treatment with LINX. LINX patients can also undergo; CT, ultrasound, X-ray, and PET scan.

  • What does LINX cost?

For patients with insurance, the out-of-pocket cost is based on your insurance plan, including deductibles and co-payments. Insurance companies and medicare are approving patients for LINX on a case-by-case basis. Once you have completed your pre-tests and are a candidate for LINX, an authorization request will be submitted to your insurance provider.
